About this video
As a rector of a large university, the impact of COVID-19 on academic work and structures, and the careers of women compared to men, has been Prof Rice’s major priority. The issues that concerned him were evidence of a drop in the submission of research papers by women during the pandemic. Home offices force women to take on more tasks especially when this combines professional research, teaching, admin tasks and the usual household and family responsibilities. He advocated that women at earlier career stage should be allowed to return from lockdown before more senior stuff to enable them catch up on the lost time and avoid future negative impact on their long term careers. Prioritising the return of senior staff, the majority of whom are men, was an example of structural (gender) inequality that disadvantages women.
