AI for academic writing: From responsible use to practical application

Avi Staiman is the founder and CEO of Academic Language Experts (ALE), where he works with researchers, universities, and research organizations to strengthen scholarly communication and responsible use of AI across the research process. He has trained more than 30,000 researchers, research managers, and academic professionals across Europe and North America on the effective and ethical use of AI for research and academic writing. Avi is an editor at The Scholarly Kitchen and co-host of the New Books Network Scholarly Communication podcast. He also serves in advisory and expert roles related to AI, research integrity, and scholarly publishing, including with Cureus, CANGARU, and the EARMA Research Management Professional Framework. His work focuses on helping researchers use AI not as a substitute for scholarly judgment, but as a tool to improve efficiency, clarity, accessibility, and the quality of academic communication while maintaining human responsibility for the research and its final output.

Aleksandra Reda is a Principal Product Manager of LeapSpace at Elsevier with over 10 years of experience developing products that support researchers across the scholarly publishing workflow. She has worked on ScienceDirect journal pages, peer review and reviewer tools, and currently focuses on Leapspace - an AI-assisted workspace designed to help researchers explore scientific literature and accelerate discovery.

Zsófia is a Senior Product Manager at Elsevier, developing solutions that help institutions maximize the impact of their research. With a background spanning molecular biology, research policy, and research intelligence, she combines scientific expertise with a deep understanding of the research ecosystem. Before joining Elsevier, Zsófia worked as a researcher and contributed to several international research projects. She has also been active in science policy through the Marie Curie Alumni Association and has advised universities, governments, and industry on research strategy, performance, and funding. Today, she helps researchers and institutions work more effectively while navigating emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence.
