The first step to funding your research or getting the dream fellowship is writing the perfect application. While every fellowship or grant opportunity is unique, focusing on some key commonalities can help you achieve success early on in your career.

In this webinar recording, Reaxys PhD Prize winners Jamie Hicks and Andrew Jupp, who have found success in securing prestigious funding and fellowships, will share their experience with getting grants and offer key tips on writing successful applications. In addition to that, Annalisa Montesanti will offer the funder perspective and offer a better understanding of what funders look for when reading grant applications.

You will come away with a better understanding of what to consider when writing a grant application, what makes applications stand out to funders and how you can establish your chances of winning grants as an early career researcher.

About the presenters

Jamie Hicks

Jamie Hicks; Department of Chemistry, University of Oxford, UK

Jamie Hicks obtained his Ph.D. from Monash University, Australia (2012-2015) under the supervision of Prof. Cameron Jones. He worked on the synthesis and reactivity of low-coordinate, low-oxidation state transition metal complexes for which he won a number of awards, including the Springer Thesis prize (2016). He then undertook a postdoctoral position at the same institution under the joint supervision of Prof. Stuart Batten and Dr. David Turner (2015-2016), working on the incorporation of amines into porous coordination polymers. Jamie then moved to the UK to undertake his current position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Oxford (2016-present), under the joint supervision of Profs Jose Goicoechea and Simon Aldridge, working on the synthesis and reactivity of nucleophilic aluminium complexes. Jamie has recently secured early career research funding in Australia from the Australian Research Council (ARC), which he will commence in June 2019. He was also winner of the prestigious Reaxys PhD Prize in 2016.

Andrew Jupp

Van ‘t Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences, University of Amsterdam

Andrew Jupp obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Oxford (2012-2016) under the supervision of Prof. Jose Goicoechea. He worked on phosphorus-containing analogues of the cyanate anion and urea, for which he was awarded the Reaxys Ph.D. Prize in Hong Kong in 2015. He subsequently carried out a Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship with Prof. Doug Stephan at the University of Toronto (2016-2018), working on the synthesis and reactivity of main-group Lewis acids and bases. He is currently a NWO-VENI laureate at the Van ‘t Hoff Institute of Molecular Sciences, University of Amsterdam, working with Assoc. Prof. Chris Slootweg on the use of light to promote the activation of small molecules.

Annalisa Montesanti

Programme Manager - R&D for National Health

Annalisa is the Programme Manager managing the Health Research Careers portfolio at the Health Research Board (HRB). She is responsible for developing and managing a portfolio for health research careers in order to develop a coordinated approach to building capacity and support a highly skilled workforce in health research in Ireland. Annalisa is also deeply involved in promoting open science, FAIR data and research data stewardship through also international collaborations.

Annalisa had many years of experience in scientific research. After working several years in Italy after the BSc, she completed her PhD in cancer biology in Oxford, UK and a post doc at UCD, Ireland. She was also awarded a fellowship from the Italian Association for Cancer Research and a Marie Curie Training and Mobility for Researchers fellowship.
